Please ask your parents/players to "like" and "follow" these sites and to tag MSC in any photos they post to their own accounts. Tagging their posts allow MSC to share them on the MSC sites.

You must register as a manager using the same platform that players are registered, Sports Sign-up. This can be accessed through a link on the Manager’s Resources page of the MSC site. There are also certification requirements for managers. Newly appointed Team Managers must submit to an on-line background check, and renew your status every two years.

The background check link is here.

When completing the background check, always remember to choose Manhattan Soccer Club - 2517 as your club if you are affiliated with a team that currently competes in the a league other than the Westchester Youth Soccer League. Choose WYSL Y- 1 if you are affiliated with a team that competes in the Westchester Youth Soccer League.

Newly-appointed team managers of WYSL teams must also take a required two-hour introductory course conducted by the WYSL.  These sessions are scheduled at various locations and points in time throughout the fall and winter

Spring/Summer – Ongoing activities

EVERY MSC PLAYER MUST SUBMIT TWO MEDICAL/WAIVER FORMS TO THE TEAM MANAGER:

- THE MSC MEDICAL FORMS
- US CLUB REGISTRATION/WAIVER FORMS

While parents are instructed repeatedly to do so, it is often the manager’s responsibility to remind and collect these.  Once collected, they should be filed for emergency use (See Team Binder)

It is helpful to designate parents interested in helping as team coordinators in the following areas:

  • Transportation

  • Equipment (field set-up) Tournaments

  • Tallie - Set up user name and password on Tallie

Transportation
Coordinating car pools for practices and games.  There may be times when families will need assist transporting there soccer player to and from the games and practices.

Equipment
Some teams may have player benches and team tents.  If needed, assign parents to assist in transporting the equipment to/from games.

Draft and send an introductory email to your team. Information should include:

  • Weekly practice schedule
  • Link to league game schedule
  • NY Cup Game Dates (when applicable)
  • Tournament Dates/locations

Sample Introductory Letters:

The game schedule for WYSL should be available mid-August. It can be found through the LEAGUE LINKS heading on the MSC MANAGERS RESOURCE page OR on the front page of the MSC website, to the right side under FIELD STATUS.

The EDP/MSSL Schedule is distributed in August and managers are required to schedule HOME GAMES using field request forms.  LINK to FIELD REQUEST FORM will be found on the MSC MANAGERS RESOURCE PAGE under Fields, Practice and Game Scheduling

Collect players and coaches cards

WYSL Cards – Must be collected at the MANAGERS MEETING to be held 9/10/15 at Goddard Riverside Community Center

US Club Cards – Renewable via KYCK/US Club as of August 1. Once you renew player cards and get approval of new players* you must PRINT the cards and then self-laminate. Please note, managers MUST apply for cards as well.

*For players new to MSC you will need to submit Proof of age, a Photo and record of Medical Forms to apply for cards.

Rosters/Game Lineup Sheets

All teams playing in WYSL must have copies of their LINEUP SHEET on hand at games. LINEUP SHEETS can be printed from the Team Wall on Sportssignup. For those not playing in WYSL, consult your league rules to see what type of roster is required.

Create a binder that includes all player’s med forms, the "formal" roster (includes all contact information for parents), league appropriate/ approved rosters and copies of player cards.

Fall/Spring

  • Player Cards: WYSL or US Club
  • Rosters/Gamecards

  • Team Binder (with Medical Forms)

  • Extra uniform (MSC Approved Expense). Every manager should have an extra kit in their manager bag.

  • Medical Kit (MSC

  • If your team is the first team scheduled for a game on a given field, you will be required to visit Kantor Fields (Field 60/61) and get the corner flags and sandbags from the Kantor container which is located there.  Teams playing the last game are responsible for returning the flags and sandbags. The combination for the container is 1606. The container must always be locked!   Failure to return the flags and sandbags to the container and to lock the container after you leave may result in a forfeiture of tournament allocation money for your team.
  • Being scheduled for the first or the last game of the day on a given field will not occur more than a few times per season, and may occur as few as one time.

1. No Referee

A. Procedure if No Assignment.  If the League’s Referee Assignor cannot provide a referee, the home club has the right to find a WYSL referee and notify the Referee Assignor that he/she has done this.

B. Procedure if Referee Fails to Appear.  If a referee is not assigned (and not obtained by paragraph A above) or the assigned referee fails to appear, the game must be played, except in games involving boys High School (including U15) and U14 division teams (see Rule X, Postponements).  With respect to boys U14 division teams only, under such circumstances, either team may decline to play without an assigned referee, but such game if not so played must be re-scheduled as a make-up game.  The coaches of the opposing teams may agree upon a referee for the game. The substitute for the referee need not be an official licensed referee. In the event the coaches cannot agree upon a referee, each team shall select a substitute referee for one half of the game.  The home team’s selection will officiate during the second half.  The substitute referee shall have those prerogatives granted to him/her by the Laws of the Game, as published by FIFA and amended by the WYSL.  The coaches of each team are responsible for checking the passes of their opponent.  The coach of the home team must furnish the League with a complete report and the team Official Team Lineups/Referee Reports for both teams which are filled out by the opposing coach.

Field pull - email Lee with game # & field name and let her know the field was pulled and game was not played:

2.  Field Pulls

 A.   General. Fields can be pulled by the field owner or field authority either before or during a game or by the referee at the field if the referee determines that the field is not safe for play.

If a field is pulled, the game is postponed. (See postponements below.) But, in all cases, the teams and clubs should try to find an alternate field and play on the scheduled day if possible.

B.   Early field pull. If a field is pulled before close of business on Friday, the home club is to inform the league scheduler and league office. The scheduler will note the field pull on the website and emails will go out to the clubs, teams, and ref assignor. The club/team may suggest to the scheduler alternative fields. The scheduler may suggest alternatives or that the teams should try to find a field.

C.  Late field pull. If a field is pulled after COB on Friday but before the game, the home team has the responsibility to notify (a) visiting teams and the referee(s) scheduled for games on the field either by telephone or by having a club member remain at the field from 30 minutes prior to game time until 15 minutes after game time, (b) the Referee Assignor, c) the league.  Such procedure is applicable for every game played at the original field. Failure to abide by this rule will result in a fine of $50 per offending team being assessed against the Club. Note that late notifications require communication by telephone, cell phone, or acknowledgement that a message was received. Sending an email is not sufficient.

D.   Field pull rescheduling. The responsibility for getting the game rescheduled and played shifts to the teams/clubs. If possible, find an alternate field on the scheduled day and play.

If the home club has another field and the game can start within half an hour of the originally scheduled time, the game officially moves and plays. The home team must make sure everyone (both teams, the referee assignor, and the ref if possible) is notified. If that is not 100% certain, post someone at the original field to redirect people to the new field.

If the new time is more than half an hour or the replacement field is at the away club, either team may decline the offer to play and the game is becomes a TBA make-up game.

1. DIY. Neither the league office nor the league scheduler should be relied on for advice, approval, or email notification; and ref coverage for games rescheduled on game day will be uncertain. Contact the ref assignor and the club referee coordinator for assistance. Follow the procedures in the WYSL Rules if there is no official ref.

2. Later games. If a referee determines that the field is not playable and will not be playable for later games, it is the responsibility of the home club to notify the coaches of visiting teams and the referees who are scheduled for later games either by telephone or by having a club member remain at the field.

3. Notice to league president. In addition, if there is general inclement weather, the home club MUST call the WYSL president (or his/her designee) on Sunday morning between 8:00 – 9:00AM to notify him/her of any field pulls up to that time. The president will inform the referee assignor (wsroassignor@gmail.com) to cancel the referee coverage for that field. The president will also tabulate the number of pulls; and, if it exceeds 50% of scheduled games of the day, the entire slate of games will be canceled and not rescheduled and a notice will be posted on the league website.  In addition to informing the president, the club president may also email the ref assignor. No games will be cancelled by the League after 10:00 a.m.

4.  Appearance at field. In bad weather, teams should not assume that a game will be canceled. The team must appear at the field of play regardless of weather conditions unless the team’s coach has been notified that the field is pulled and the game canceled.

  • Confirm that your last game score has been reported to your league and MSC by your league’s deadline
  • Connect with your team’s coach via email or telephone. Confirm that she/he does not have a conflict for the next weekend (they must contact DOC early in the week if they do) as well as confirm a call time for the team the following weekend

FOR WYSL:

Click and scroll to find your game.  Click and see TEAM CONTACT INFO.  If you have a home game please let the opposing manager/coach know about parking rules on Randall's.  Also, ask that manager what color kit they plan to wear.

  • Confirm game/practices on MSC schedules (See Homepage of MSC site for link to grids) and communicate any changes to MSC  ASAP

  • Communicate week's schedule to team including practices, games and driving directions

  • Contact opponent to confirm game and INCLUDE Randall’s Island Map as well as any parking or traffic alerts for the weekend

Reimbursements - Submit expenses through our TALLIE system.

Reasonable team expenses are submitted for reimbursement using the TALLIE platform. You must receive an MSC TALLIE user name and password from Sam Arnoff or Rich Corvino. All acceptable expenses are outlined within the application. Expenses should be submitted MONTHLY if possible. Reimbursement of expenses more than 90 days old is at the discretion of MSC. Reimbursement guidelines, as to procedure and as to which expenses are reimbursable and which are not, will be found in the Manager’s Resources web page on the MSC website, categorized under EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT.

Player Retention Survey

Managers should be immediately notifying the DOC of any player departures once the season is in progress.  To do this, you will use the PLAYER RETENTION SURVEY FORM, which will be found in the Manager’s Resources web page on the MSC website, categorized under PLAYER MANAGEMENT AND REGISTRATION

Other Tasks

Tournaments

MSC Teams often compete in local tournaments during the fall, winter and spring soccer seasons. Teams that wish to compete in tournaments must first get approval from the DOC.  Once approved (or directed to register) team managers, or appointed tournament coordinators, are responsible for registering their teams for competition at the level of play suggested by the DOC.  Registration fees for approved tournaments are reimbursable through TALLIE within the team budget allotted.

Winter

All parents should be aware that the arrival of winter does NOT mean that soccer has ceased. Every MSC team has at least a weekday and a weekend practice that players are expected to attend throughout the winter.

As a manager you are expected to continue:

  • Weekly communication with coach

  • Weekly communication to team

Gym space allocation for team winter practices will be determined by Rich Corvino. All teams will train a minimum of two days per week during the winter (first week of December through mid-March), usually one weeknight practice and one weekend practice. Teams that desire a third weekly practice must contact Rich Corvino, and extra practice slots will be doled out as per availability. Expect to see the winter practice grid delivered to the managers and coaches at some point in early November.

Discuss with the DOC before you apply and pay for a tournament. There will be a limited budget for winter tournament play, where each team will be allocated a fixed amount of usable dollars (between $600 and $900) that will be put toward financing winter competition activity. The DOC will determine and approve all winter competition activity.

For NON WYSL Teams – You will receive your spring game lineup and will need to begin field requests (home) and coordinating game times (away) likely in February. Do not delay in doing so.

At the end of the spring season, MSC hosts tryouts for every player either returning or new to the club.  Returning players are expected to attend.  You will receive word from your coach or age group leader about the dates and times of your tryouts and should communicate this to your team in your weekly email. They will also be posted on the MSC site.  Returning players do not need to register or sign up for tryouts.  However, if players/parents know that they are NOT planning to return, it is important that this is conveyed to coaches so that they know the number of player spots available for the coming year.

A Note From Director of Coaching Ray Selvadurai

Managers,

The Manhattan Soccer Club Youth Academy is THE most important program in our club. We are developing the future of our club, where our players can learn not only the requisite skills and techniques of the sport, but also valuable lessons of being part of a collective group.  As both a member of a team and the greater MSC Community, the lessons and values they learn will carry over into their lives outside of soccer.  We want them to see connections to the other collective groups in their life, so that our players will also find success within their school community, their family, and more.

We take a holistic approach at MSC, where IT IS MORE IMPORTANT to develop a young player's character, integrity, accountability, sportsmanship, courage, self-confidence, generosity, discipline, self-awareness, and emotional control than just their ability on the field.  We look forward to reinforcing these same goals that you work on at home.  Together we are stronger than alone.

Outlook on matches

League play and tournament matches are viewed at this program level as primarily skill testing. We are looking to see if our players have grasped the concepts from training and can apply these in pressurized game situations. Though we do want the players to have success on match day, the final score line will not trump the player development goals of the MSC Youth Academy. MSC takes a patient and long-term development plan for our players to succeed and gain competence both as individual players and as members of a team.

Coaching Philosophy

SC has an outstanding and experienced coaching staff. Each team has been assigned a coach that will lead the training sessions and match play, however, it imperative to understand that the development of our players at this level is the responsibility of the entire club and not just the assigned coach. This season, as Director of Coaching and at my discretion, I will occasionally assign a different coach to a training session or match in order for the coaching staff to gain a more complete understanding of the players in our club. Through this collaborative approach, our players will benefit from different perspectives, voices and directions. Also, the coaching staff will receive more valuable feedback on player development from multiple viewpoints.

So please do not panic if your assigned coach is not at a session or match.  We will alert team managers if I assign a different coach to a session or match. Understand that our coaches have a great deal of experience in training and match management, which allows such a collaborative coaching approach to be successful. I personally am looking forward to working with our Youth Academy teams in training sessions and matches this year as much as possible.  We have a great group of kids, coaches, and parents, and it is a pleasure to be a part of the MSC Community.

I hope this email provides some basic program points!

I'll see you all at the fields.

- Ray
