Manhattan Soccer Club Financial Aid Procedures

2010-2011 Seasonal Year

The Board of the Manhattan Soccer Club is introducing streamlined, more accessible and, more equitable scholarship procedures.  The biggest change will be that individuals will apply directly to the Club for scholarships instead of through their teams. A third-party financial needs assessment organization, TADS, will make the initial evaluation of family need based upon uniform information that every applicant will be asked to provide on a confidential basis.  This evaluation will be reviewed, and modified if necessary, by the Club's Scholarship Committee.  TADS will charge each family applying for assistance a fee of $29.

On-line forms are now available (see the bottom of this email) for people who want to begin the process.  We hope that initial awards will be made by the middle of August. Partial scholarships as well as full scholarships will be available. Below are some details that hopefully will make this process more transparent:
  • For Academy teams (U9-U12) the annual per-player cost is determined by the Club.  Accordingly, the maximum assistance will be the entire fee, as determined by the Club, for the applicable age group. There will however be soccer related costs, for example tournament travel and meals, that will not be covered by the annual fee or by a scholarship.
  • For U13 and older teams, the annual per player cost is determined by the individual teams based on the scope of each team’s program.  The maximum scholarship amount will be determined by a formula  that limits, for scholarship purposes, expenses in various categories. This means that a full scholarship generally will not cover the cost of all team expenses.
  • Each scholarship award will indicate the amount of the team fees the family will be required to pay, from nothing up to the full formula amount.  Team costs in addition to this required payment will be the responsibility of the team.
  • In the past the team was responsible for covering the "1st" full scholarship amount.  This new system eliminates that team cost since all players will apply directly to the Club for assistance.
  • At the present time we do not contemplate a limit on how much scholarship assistance is available to a single team, but this may change depending on our experience and our ability to fund all Club scholarship needs.
  • If, because of aggregate Club funding limitations or because individual applicant assessments do not allow us to provide sufficient assistance to a player, then each team may, at its discretion, pay any uncovered player’s expenses.

To apply for a scholarship, go to the TADS web site and complete the on-line application.  If you wish, they have a paper application option.  They also have a work-sheet available for download which may help you gather the required information.  The on-line application form is also available in Spanish.  After completing the on-line form you will be required to send them, on-line or by mail, a copy of your most recent federal income tax return.

After you have created a user-name and signed on, you will pick the school year as 2010-2011. Then you will pick the “City” (Manhattan) and the “School” – (Manhattan Soccer Club).  The application should be self-explanatory from that point.
